From Fine to Flourishing
"How are you?" "I'm fine." It's the standard exchange of our time. But is "fine" really the goal? Positive psychology suggests we can aim higher: for flourishing.
The Flourishing Scale
Imagine a scale from -10 to +10. Traditional therapy often helps people move from -10 (suffering) to 0 (neutral/fine). Positive psychology focuses on moving from 0 to +10 (flourishing). Flourishing isn't about being happy all the time; it's about having a sense of meaning, engagement, and well-being.
The PERMA Model
Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, identified five pillars of flourishing (PERMA):
- P - Positive Emotion: Experiencing joy, gratitude, and hope.
- E - Engagement: Being fully absorbed in activities (flow state).
- R - Relationships: Having deep, supportive connections.
- M - Meaning: Belonging to and serving something bigger than yourself.
- A - Accomplishment: Pursuing goals and achieving mastery.
Moving the Needle
You don't need to overhaul your life to start flourishing. Pick one pillar to focus on this week.
To boost Positive Emotion: Start a gratitude journal.
To boost Engagement: Spend an hour doing a hobby you love without distraction.
To boost Meaning: Volunteer or help a neighbor.
Don't settle for fine. You were built to flourish.
