Seasonal Self-Care: Embracing Autumn
Nature doesn't bloom all year round, and neither should you. As the season shifts from the high energy of summer to the cooling days of autumn, our self-care needs to shift too.
The Energy of Autumn
Autumn is a season of transition and letting go. Just as trees drop their leaves to conserve energy for winter, we are invited to shed what no longer serves us. It is a time for grounding, harvesting, and turning inward.
Autumn Practices
1. Warm Your Body
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is associated with dryness and wind. Counter this by keeping your body warm. Switch from salads to roasted root vegetables, soups, and stews. Drink warm herbal teas like ginger or cinnamon.
2. Protect Your Lungs
Autumn is associated with the lungs and the emotion of grief. Breathwork is especially powerful this time of year. Wear scarves to protect your neck and chest from the wind.
3. Edit Your Life
Take a cue from the trees. Look at your schedule, your commitments, and even your home. What is dead weight? What can you release to create space for rest? Decluttering your physical space can be incredibly therapeutic now.
4. Slow Down
The days are getting shorter. Respect the natural rhythm by going to bed a bit earlier. Allow yourself to do less. This isn't laziness; it's seasonal attunement.
